Don't panic! Everything you need to know about cult author Douglas
Adams and his most famous creation, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the
Galaxy, is in here. From its unlikely start as a BBC radio serial
in 1978, Hitchhiker's Guide developed into five bestselling novels,
a BAFTA-winning television series, spoken word LPs that made the
pop charts, dozens of extraordinary stage productions around the
world, a computer game which topped the charts for a whole year -
and now a Hollywood feature film. The Pocket Essential Hitchhiker's
Guide is the only book in the galaxy to document and explain all
the contradictory variants of the story, packed with bizarre trivia
and illuminating quotes from many of those directly involved in
Hitchhiker's Guide, including Douglas Adams himself. Also included
is information on Douglas Adams' other work: the Dirk Gently
novels, The Meaning of Liff, Last Chance to See, Starship Titanic
and his contributions to Doctor Who, Monty Python and Comic Relief.
This new edition is fully revised and updated to include the
Hitchhiker's Guide movie and the brand new radio series.
The working relationship between the Royal Navy and the US Navy
began in a tentative and stuttering fashion in the dark days of
1917 and prior to the American entry into World War One they were
largely unacquainted. Relations between the individual members of
the two services in distant waters appear to have been cordial but
at the highest level there was no real contact, since Britain's
main concern was with the more menacing Imperial German Navy. It
was the German announcement of unrestricted submarine warfare from
February 1917 which ensured the two would work together, but
America's involvement was gradual and uncertain until late March,
and hostilities were finally declared on April 6. Extensive use has
been made of American sources, including the Navy Department
records at the National Archives, and the papers of the secretary
of the Navy Josephus Daniels, Admirals W S Benson and W S Simms
(Library of Congress), W V Pratt (Naval Historical Centre),
together with material from all the papers of President F D
Roosevelt and various British publications.
This text considers the relationship between the Royal Navy and the
US Navy during the years 1917-1919.
This book provides a detailed study of the Atomic Layer Epitaxy
technique (ALE), its development, current and potential
applications. The rapid development of coating technologies over
the last 25 years has been instrumental in generating interest and
expertise in thin films of materials, and indeed the market for
thin film coatings is currently GBP3 billion with projected annual
growth of 20 to 30% [1]. ALE is typical of thin-film processes in
that problems in the processing or preparation of good quality
epitaxial films have been overcome, resulting in better
performance, novel applications of previously unsuitable materials,
and the development of new devices. Many materials exhibit
interesting and novel properties when prepared as thin films and
doped. Vapour-deposited coatings and films are used extensively in
the semiconductor and related industries for making single devices,
integrated circuits, microwave hybrid integrated circuits, compact
discs, solar reflective glazing, fibre optics, photo voltaic cells,
sensors, displays, and many other products in general, everyday
use. The ALE technique was developed by a research team led by
Tuomo Suntola, working for Instrumentarium Oy in Finland. The key
members of this team were lorma Antson, Arto Pakkala and Sven
Lindfors. In 1977, the research team moved from Instrumentarium to
Lohja Corporation, where they continued the development of ALE and
were granted a patent in the same year. By 1980, the technique was
sufficiently advanced that they were producing flat-screen
electroluminescent displays based on a manganese-doped zinc
sulphide layer.
Wise (1806-1876) was extremely active on the Virginia and national
political scene from the early 1830s to the mid-1860s, drawing
popular support because of his projection of hopefulness and
energy. Regarded as eccentric, Wise is given, in this study, an
interpretation that finds consistency in his life-long
controversial and impulsive behavior. Simpson stresses Wise's
ambivalent attitude toward slaves and slave-holding, authority and
authority figures, and Virginia and the United States.
How might the Christian church effectively engage today's
politically charged, profit-motivated world while remaining
faithful to its biblical and theological roots? The contributors in
this book argue that public theology provides a promising pathway
forward. The public theology emerging from these pages has been
influenced by the theological interests and commitments of Gary M.
Simpson, Lutheran pastor and systematic theologian. His approach to
public theology is intersectional and global; he artfully weaves
together Lutheran theology and the civil society arena of Critical
Social Theory. These essays provide three angles of vision on faith
active in twenty-first century public contexts: contextual,
ethical, and theological. While not mutually exclusive, these
distinct strands of thought engage and challenge the church to
substantial reflection on the challenging and often bewildering
circumstances of the twenty-first century social world. Some
reflect on God's activity within particular global contexts, others
offer new perspectives on Lutheran confessional traditions, still
others step boldly into innovative theological assertions. As the
Christian church is ever forming and reforming, this book urges it
to grapple with the "publicness" of its timely and timeless
mission.
This book is a response to the binary thinking and misuse of
history that characterize contemporary immigration debates.
Subverting the traditional injunction directed at migrants to 'go
back to where they came from', it highlights the importance of the
past to contemporary discussions around migration. It argues that
historians have a significant contribution to make in this respect
and shows how this can be done with chapters from scholars in,
Asia, Europe, Australasia and North America. Through their work on
global, transnational and national histories of migration, an
alternative view emerges - one that complicates our understanding
of 21st-century migration and reasserts movement as a central
dimension of the human condition. History, Historians and the
Immigration Debate makes the case for historians to assert
themselves more confidently as expert commentators, offering a
reflection on how we write migration history today and the forms it
might take in the future.
The multimodal treatment of acute psychiatric illness involves a
set of integrated, systematic interventions that stabilize
individuals with severe mental illness and help them avoid
unnecessary psychiatric hospitalization. This volume focuses on
those suffering from schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder,
bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, severe anxiety, and
substance dependence, and provides individual practitioners and
professional teams with the tools for responding to crisis and
delivering acute care. The authors bolster the text with real-world
case examples, helpful diagrams, and printable worksheets.
A Church for the World: The Church's Role in Fostering Democracy
and Sustainable Development challenges theologians and lay readers
alike to think about the role of the church vis-a-vis its
responsibility to the world. How may the church contribute to
democracy and foster sustainable development? Contributors from
mostly non-Western theological communities offer historical,
developmental, ecclesiastical, and theological perspectives on the
church-world relationship, challenging misconceptions and practices
that prevent the church from living up to its transformational
vocation as salt and light in the world (Matt. 5:13-16). The
driving force behind the questions and perspectives discussed here
is Gustavo Gutierrez's axiom in A Theology of Liberation: A
theology which fails to address the most urgent needs of ordinary
people is not worthy of the word "theology." Proceeding from this
insight, this book creates awareness about the relationship between
religion, democracy, and development, and aims to strengthen the
self-understanding of the church with regard to its
responsibilities in the world.

Most of the people receiving physiotherapy are middle-aged or
older, thus it is important for all physiotherapists to acquire the
knowledge and skills particular to working with older people. The
role of the physiotherapist is not restricted to reducing
disability, but also encompasses the promotion of positive health,
and Barrie Pickles and colleagues have taken the innovative
approach of combining both of these aspects in this research-based,
comprehensive textbook. Written by an international team of
experts, the text is divided into the following sections:
Background to Aging The Aging Process Working with Older People
Management of Impairments and Disabilities Handicaps of Aging
